Any help for skin that gets sticky when it gets wet?

sticky skin

Three nights ago I noticed that after washing my hands they felt really sticky, almost like when you use the last paper towel on the roll and you get that glue residue on your hands. However, it wasn't the last paper towel so I figured maybe the liquid soap was really old and doing funky things so I rewashed with dish soap and again grabbed a paper towel. Once again, my hands got sticky as I dried them off. Thinking now that there was something wrong with these paper towels, I washed again and this time dried with a hand towel only to yet again find my hands sticky as they dried off. The stickiness only lasts 30-60 seconds, until the skin completely dries, but during that in-between time of soaking wet and totally dry they feel very tacky to the touch and my fingers will actually stick to each other.

The next day when I took a shower I noticed that the water was beading up on the skin on my arms. Sure enough, when I dried off afterwards I found that all of my skin is tacky to the thouch until it is completely air dried.

Today I shaved my legs and my skin felt almost like it had a layer of wax on it that kept catching the razor. The skin on my hands seems to be getting more sticky when they get wet. Water continues to bead on my skin when it gets wet. I asked my children if they can feel that my skin is sticky to the touch and they said yes.

This is affecting all of my skin now, including my face. I always put a moisturizer on my face after washing and it does not feel like my skin is absorbing it now, it just feels heavy and greasy since the lotion just sits there on top. I also tried putting lotion on my hands and it was not absorbed at all, just left my hands feeling very slimy and greasy so I wiped it off.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this or have any suggestions for what might be causing it? Thanks for any held you can give.

Hi sticky mess this is Diane. I have a few health issues. I do have thyroid nodules (2 solid and 3 cysts bilaterally). TSH levels are always normal. Will be seeing endocrinologist in a few weeks for follow up. I have NOT had a soda in 15 years due to a bad reaction from sodium benzoate content in soda so I only drink bottled drinking water labeled poland spring. This means NO tea, coffee, juice, lemonade, nothing but water. My lips have recently become sticky also so I know how you feel. I apply lipstick during the day to ease the problem. I do eat a lot of baked products e.g.(bread, cookies, pie, cake) so yeast, as a cause, may be right on the mark. What else is there to eat if I eliminate bread, flour and pasta?? Im not a big fan of meat. I wont go near fish because of the iodine content, or mercury, etc. and the effect it could have on my thyroid so that leaves me with chicken and vegetables if i choose to forsake the yeast foods. I went to my cardiologist yesterday and told him about the stickiness and he never heard of such a thing. Like I said I am pending an endocrine appointment and sometime in November I am going to the dermatologist. In the meantime the stickiness could get better I hope! The underarm stickiness did improve with the change to the Sure deodorant. Hoping the way this came is the way it's going to go. I am a bit frustrated that no one in my close circle of associates is experiencing this. It's the people on this thread that give me a sense of hope. My daughter is not bothered by her stickiness and never brings it up. Its a non issue to her. My husband doesnt have any stickiness. Go figure! I will tho, be looking into the vitamin A in my diet to see if that is my particular case thanks to you pointing that out. Will update regularly. Please Keep the faith..

I've had sticky skin from head to toe for months. My lips are stuck together like glue everyday and I'm trying different products (and also trying to eliminate soda) to see if I can get some relief! Never in my life have I had to deal with chronic yeast infections, noticible allergies to chemicals such as sodium benzoate, or known thyroid concerns until this year. I'm trying to find out if other people with 'sticky skin' are also dealing with other health issues to see if they are linked. If so, then we can narrow this down even further and say that the underlying cause of sticky skin could possibly be a yeast allergy or thyroid imbalance! I had bloodwork for my thyroid and it shows hypothyroidism, and my doctor is trying to figure out the right dose of Levothyroxine. It's known that if your body doesn't produce enough of the thyroid hormone, numerous symptoms can occur including: allergies, inability to fight off infections, a decrease in blood flow to your skin and poor circulation so you feel cold all the time. Yeast overgrowth can cause allergies as well. I'm currently trying various yeast creams and Nystatin oral powder to try to get some relief from this madness. If anyone else with sticky skin is experiencing any of these additional health problems, please let me know. Thank you!

Hi again! Thanks for the updates. I saw my dermatologist, and he said too much Vitamin A causes sticky skin. I don't know if that's the cause for us, but I wanted to mention it. I also saw an MD to get his opinion on why I'm suffering from skin allergy symptoms that I'm never had before, and he thought it was a combination of my underactive thyroid & yeast overgrowth. Diane, do have yeast infections or thyroid issues, and do you drink regular coke or pepsi?? I'm trying to find out if we have a common denominator. My lips are terribly sticky everyday, plus my saliva feels slimy and I feel the need to spit often. It seems like the cause is something internal, or something I've injested. I've tried changing toothpastes, I've switched from Cherry Chapstick to Hugo Naturals lip balm and nothing is helping. The only thing I can think of is it's an allergy to yeast in my system or it's from the regular pepsi or coke that I drink. Any thoughts??

I'm curious why you are changing chapstick and soda drinks, but did not mention how your actual conditions are being treated.

You mentioned that your doctor said that you have an underactive thyroid, yeast overgrowth and possible high levels of Vitamin A. Are you having these other areas tested (thyroid, yeast and Vitamin A levels) and treated?

Hi again, This is Diane. Too much stuff going on. Finally went to my internist and of course when i went to show him how i can pick up paper with my sticky hands it didn't happen. I wet my hands in the sink in his office,he touched my hands and they werent even sticky. I rewet them and they were fine. It figures, its like when your car makes that certain noise and when you go to the mechanic and it doesnt do it. He has never heard of the symptoms i complained of but nevertheless has referred me to a dermatologist. My hands are sticky still I can't explain why they didn't appear to be at the doctors office. I stopped using the mennan deodorant and have been on the SURE and my underarms and quite noticeably LESS sticky and much improved. However, my lips are sticky when pursed together. Will let you know what dermatologist says. Where are the updates from the people writing on this thread months ago who were at that time going to the doctors and said they would let us know? Keep the faith everyone!

Diane - Thanks for coming back, and like you I wish others would do so too. I'm glad you got the referral, and hope you are able to get some solid support when you see the dermatologist...and that your hands are sticky that day!! :-) Pat

Did any of you women ever consider the salt in the water??? its reacting to the chemicals in your soaps!!! I have had the same issue with sticky hands but it only happens when i wash wih hand soap.. I think im using to much soap on my towels.. or its too much salt in the softner... not sure.. but the sticky hands only occur when the salt is not running through the softner as much. the usage i should say....

I didn't have any of these problems until I lived in my current home, and I'm thinking about moving somewhere else to try to get some relief if salt in the water is a possibility. Also, I drink a lot of regular coke & pepsi. I know those should be free of sodium benzoate, but I wonder if the phosphoric acid ingredient is related to benzoic acid.

Well, I gotta say that it sounds like there are a lot of variations to our symptoms. It could be any number of things, or variations (or strains) of the same thing. As for me, I think mine was mainly caused by consumption (of soda). For some of you, it sounds like something that is applied. I say this because it seems the focus is mainly on the hands, which may be how you are applying (spreading) the agent to other parts. This may have been an obvious observation to most of you, but it was just something that hit me the other day and I've been meaning to share with you guys : )
