So, I had sex right after my period ended (oct 30) and it was unprotected. I got a little paranoid (even though I think he did not came inside me) and took the next choice pill the next day.. followed all the instructions. but now, six days later i am bleeding seems like a menstruation. What is this? is this going to be menstruation for the month of November? My next due date is 21/22. Am I going to get my period by then? I am kind of freaking out. help please.

Hi Anon

Thanks for your question and welcome to EmpowHER!

Bleeding like this is not uncommon with these kinds of emergency birth control pills and sometimes periods do not even out until the month after a person takes the medication.

You can read a lot more on the Next Choice website and if you are still worried, there is a phone number for you so you can actually talk to someone. http://www.mynextchoice.com/Consumer/howtake_QA.asp#11

I hope this helps!

Thank you for your response! I have another question, can I be pregnant even though I drank the morning after pill and is bleeding now, is there a chance that i could be pregnant even though i am bleeding now? sorry, it's my first time drinking the morning after pill.

The bleeding you are experiencing may be a menstrual period, or it may be breakthrough bleeding. You may not know for sure until your next cycle's period. You can read more about emergency contraception: Emergency Contraception Update, 2010.

I had my period Oct 25 and ended on the 29/30, i had sex on the 30th. it was unprotected so the next day my bf and i went to buy next choice, on nov 6 i started bleeding. it stopped on nov 9 or 10(i think) but i still have little brownish discharge. I'm just worried that i might be pregnant. is there a possibility? i've read that there is no chance of getting pregnant AFTER a period or something like that. uggghhh. please explain to me more.. and im expecting to get my period on nov 21/22, i hope it comes. so when is the next cycle period? on nov 21/22 or on december now?

Bleeding is an indication of not being pregnant. Emergency contraception is known to possibly alter your menstrual cycle. Please read that article Alison posted. It explains what to expect after taking emergency contraception.

There is always a chance of getting pregnant if you have sex. You can get pregnant at any time during your cycle. Many women do not know when they ovulate, unless they are trying to get pregnant, and you can ovulate at any time in your cycle. So, if you ovulate, you can get pregnant. It is not true that there are certain times when you cannot get pregnant. There is just less chance of pregnancy at certain times in your cycle going off the average time that a woman will ovulate.

In saying that... it is unlikely you are pregnant. The bleeding you are having is because of the pill. All the morning after pills are, are mega high doses of birth control pills. So, it would make sense to bleed after taking one. Morning after pills also have a high probability of causing irregular cycles for a month or two after taking them.

Feel free to message me if you would like more information.

Thank you. You're comment made me feel better. I think the pill really disrupted my cycle pretty bad. I am not having unprotected sex ever again.. this feeling I'm feeling right now (the wait for my next period, thoughts in my head if I might be pregnant or not) is really killing me. I read on the emergency contraceptive update that when you bleed after taking the pill then you are not pregnant. i hope so..

My question is basically the same. if you got bleeding a few days after taking the pill, and it is about a week and a half earlier than expected, is that a sign you are not pregnant and your next period will be in another month from now? or does that count as your months period?

Hi Anonymous,

Yes, that is correct. As Christine said, bleeding means not pregnant.

Good Luck!
