Q:

Can the color of your urine affect the result on a home pregnancy test?

I recently did 3 home pregnancy tests, all of which resulted in a negative result. My concern is that I drank half a glass of water about 30 minutes before I took the test. The color of my urine was almost clear, will this have a effect on the outcome of my pregnancy test results (in other words give a false result)?

Guide

Hello SAgirl,

Welcome to the EmpowHER community. I am so glad you came to us with your question.

The simple answer is yes.

Normal urine color ranges from pale yellow to deep amber — the result of a pigment called urochrome and how diluted or concentrated the urine is.

For the most accurate pregnancy test result, you test in the morning. Use the urine when you first get up. It is concentrated because it has remained in your bladder while you slept.

Disregard the results of the prior tests. Test again.

Regards,
Maryann
