Dear Anon

Thanks for your question and welcome!

Tonsils can affect us adversely at any age, although we usually hear of them being removed in children.

Allergies may affect tonsils but they more often cause swelling in other area of the nose and throat. Are you sure it's your tonsils that are swollen? The ears, nose and throat are all connected and allergies may affect all three. Sometimes all at the same time.

Tonsillitis is very painful and happens when the tonsils swell painfully when the body is fighting off infections. You may be getting tonsillitis because your immune system isn't working well. Or you may have naturally large tonsils. Do you know if you have always have large tonsils or if they are actually swollen? You may have both - allergies and tonsils that constantly swell. Some adults choose for them to be removed, called a tonsillectomy. Has your doctor mentioned this to you? You can watch a short video of the procedure here: http://www.empowher.com/media/reference/tonsillectomy

Are you seeing an allergist? Have you told him/her about the tonsil connection?
