how do I know when pityriasis rosea is healing?

I was diagnosed with pityriasis rosea almost 6 weeks ago. Apparently it takes 6-8 weeks to disappear, but I keep finding new spots every time I shower, new red spots seem to pop up. The first ones I got seem to keep changing. Does anyone know what these spots are meant to look like before they just disappear?

Hello, my daughter it 11.5 years old and suffers from PR for some days. We only got the diagnosis yesterday after visiting the doctor. Her body is full of itching red spots which are spreading. It began on her chest (the first big one was on her leg but we thought it's because of a mosquito). It has started spreading very quickly three days ago and she suffers a lot. Dies anybody know if there is a chance that it will take less than three months? Can it last only two-three weeks or so?
Did you hear something about tea tree oil treatment?
Has anyone tried hot springs?

Thank you

Yes. I ve battled this for some years now, take her out in the sun as much as possible! UV light is the only thing that kills this rash. The doctors wilol tell you that it will only accure once and wont come back but it does. If it is winter or fall where your at, then go out and buy some aveeno body wash (only bath herb in that) and go to a all natural store and purchase PURE shea butter, NOT lotion with shea butter. It should be a golden color and stiff and melts when you rub it in the skin. This will cure the rash as well but its not as quick as the sunlight but it will get rid of the itching and prevent discoloration in her skin after it heals. This will reduce the time of healing by 1 month. Sunlight or UV light heals it within 1 month. Trust me i know!! I have it down to a science now.

The answer to this for me was to do a course of UV light, 5 mins on alternate days. After the first, the spread stopped, after the second it was in remission, and after the fourth it had almost gone. Maybe this won't work for everyone, but if you have PR, get tanning today.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'm 59 year old male. I got the herald patch about six weeks ago - very near to a wound I got. The full thing set in about two weeks ago. First I thought it was insect bites on my inner thighs, and wondered if I had bedbugs. Then hives appeared down the back of my legs. Then the spots turned red, and spread, and then seemed to flow out into big patches of red. I've started doing UV at the gym. The front of my upper legs are now real painful. Good to hear the words of encouragement, but weeks and months of this? Hell.

Go to your dermatologist and get triamcinolone ointment .1%. This ointment saved me!!! I had a pretty bad case and she gave me this ointment and within TWO days its 90% gone and have barely any scars. It seriously saved me!!!!

About a week ago, I randomly started to get bumps on my neck one night and thought it was an allergic reaction to the necklace I was wearing. However, the next morning when I woke up I had red blotchy bumps all over my neck and moving down my chest at a rast rate. The next few days only resulted in it moving down my chest to my stomach and all down my back. After a few days I went to my school doctor on campus and she said her best guess (not so comforting) was pityriasis rosea. Being a 20 year old college student, when she said it could take 8-12 WEEKS to get rid of I couldn't help start crying because im going on vacation to chicago for my 21st in 2 weeks. The answer that it could take weeks was not acceptable to me so I started searching for answers. I found this blog and it has been TREMENDOUS help. I've had this for 1 week so far and I tried the whole laying out for 20 minutes a day idea and IT HAS HELPED! The first day after I laid out I could already see the difference. It isn't as red and the bumps are slowly getting smaller. Also, Aveeno eczema lotion has helped with the calming of my skin and the redness a bit. My case hasn't been itchy (thank god) however since it is still progressing it has been getting a little itchy on my stomach and back of my neck. Im going to the dermatologist tomorrow so hopefully she can shed more light on what I can do. All I can say though from my short experience with this is TAN, DO NOT shower in warm water, and moisturize with skin calming lotion right after tanning. Also, do not sweat by any means. I went to the gym and it only made it irritated and spread even more. UV lights are my best friend at this point. If anyone has any more advice, I'm all ears!

OMG. I was in hell for 2 weeks with the redness and the unbearable itching. I've been reading through a lot of message boards and am willing to try anything... I tried head and shoulders and what a difference it made to the itching and rash progression. After the first use, I noticed that the itching has gone down dramatically. After the second use (at night< i did the first shower with head and shoulders shampoo in the morning), I was SOLD. I had the best sleep ever that night. The next morning, I noticed that the rash is less red and weepy.... I am hoping that I am on the mend and on its way.
I do want to thank all of you that post things that worked for you on this condition (pityriasis rose) as it helped a lot of us in making it easier to deal with. My recommendation is to use Head and Shoulders shampoo as soap. It worked like a miracle for me. I follow it with the Aveeno ecsema cream....

I sat in the sun 10 minutes a day, used aloe 2-3 times a day, took lysine pills, avoided sugar. The itching was better each morning and got worse throughout the day. Areas exposed to the sun got better faster. Aloe helped with healing. I'm 3 weeks into this and only have itching below the waste where no sun/ uv rays have gone.

I wore tank tops under my bra to help with itching.
I got a diagnosis from a doctor and also went to acupuncture.

Im not sure if anyone can help me here, not very good at explaining things but ill have ago...
At first i was diagnosed with an ear infection my doctor gave me some tablets that brought me out in a rash, thinking this was an allergic reaction i immediatly stopped and contacted my GP,
after 4weeks of 3 different doctors not knowing what my rash was ( they said it was not an allergic reaction) i had come out in tiny little water blisters and one huge what looked like was a spot this spread within a few days and itched like maad!

i was completley fed up of this and went to A&E, they informed me it was spyrosis, and refrered me to yet another doctor he diagnosed me with PR also a mixture of excema & spyrosis and said wait it out,
panicing as i go abroad in now 5 days i have used steroid cream diprobase taken citerozine tablets everyday and calomile lotion, nothing is working, i am unable to use tanning salons as my skin doesnt like them :(
After looking at photos online of PR i think mine looks nothing like this they actually look like random fat spots all over my body, its embarrassing and they weep i get a few break out everyday, this started at the beginning of feb it feels like ive had it a lifetime its upsetting.
Im not convinced i actually have PR but im unable to see a doctor untill im back off holiday.
Can i go in chlorine or will this make it all worse?
Very sorry about the long rubbish explanation
Any Advice would be appreciated so much!
