How do you tell if your heartburn problem is from low acid in the stomach or to much acid?

It seems that we need to know that so a to know whether to take the antiacids,etc. If it is low acid, what should you do?

Thanks for your question and for finding EmpowHER.
If you are having persistent heartburn, it may be time to get it checked out by a doctor. Self medicating and self-diagnosis may not be the best route if you could possibly have a real problem going on. That being said, if you have minor bouts of heartburn, you can modify your diet and/or lifestyle to try and pinpoint the cause of your discomfort. Here is a video with Dr. Andrew Weil about that:
