I've had a normal healthy pregnany until this past weekend... went to the hospital with cramping and was told that I was having contractions.... they were lasting a min and were about 5 mins apart... I didnt dialate. They thought i had a bladder infection b/c there was blood in the sample. They gave IV fluids, antiobiotics and Gravol hoping they would stop or slow down. Contractions slowed and I was released from hospital the next day on bed rest. I then had contractions return yesterday and returned to hospital once again only to find out that its not an infection causing the contractions and they are no longer sure what is. They said to go home rest prepare yourself for the worst but hope for the best. The baby did have a strong heart beat at 150bpm and looked great on the ultra sound... is there really nothing they can do but sit an wait? Im worried... i don't want to loose this baby and im thinking very positive... but i dont know what to do. The contractions/pain isnt as regular as it was it just comes and goes at long intervals now... im just hoping they go away all together

I just have another question that maybe someone could help me with... this pregnancy has been filled with many ups and downs and I keep getting more things happen that I question if its normal or not. I just saw my Dr. on monday and I dont see her again for a week and a half.

Ive read a bit in my pregnancy books about a mucus plug and how it can be a pre cursor to labor. I think I lost mine today.. It was big glob of stringy mucus .. there was no blood in it but it was about the size of a quarter and it was a yellowish color. Im wondering if I should be calling my Dr or if I should just wait until my next appointment to mention it to her. I still get the cramping and all that stuff but at the last appointment she said it was just round ligiment pain and braxton hicks and that if I wasnt bleeding I didnt need to worry...

Its hard not worry though when so much has happened already and I woulndt want to just put something off if it needed to be checked out. The baby is still moving around but I do have lots of cramping today... Its so hard to know when its the first baby!!!

Hi Anon,

How far along are you now?

During pregnancy its pretty common to have an increase in discharge which could be what you are experiencing. A mucus plug is not stringy-- it's more like a plug-- it's got the texture of thick jello, yellowish to brownish in color (any brown spotting is old blood) and you may see some bright red blood as well. Some women never see theirs and others will notice chunks of the plug by the time they are well into their 30-something weeks. It is a precursor to labor, however, this doesn't mean labor is imminent-- it could be 3 or 4 weeks away from the time you notice it.

For someone who has had a lot of "scares" during your pregnancy, it is best that you do the least amount of lifting and strenuous activity, and always remain hydrated. If you experience any bleeding, notice a significant decrease in movement of the baby, or have contractions that do not go away on their own after a few minutes-- please call your doctor immediately. Remember that if you are walking during a BH contraction, sit down and vice versa to stop the "contractions"--this is one of the things that distinguishes true labor from false labor.

Best Wishes,

Rosa

Hi Rosa,

I started having cramps and a dull back ache and what felt possibly like contractions after I posted my question. I called the local hospital and they told me to go in right away. They wernt sure if it was labor or braxton hicks because the contractions were small and far apart (we dont have an ob at our hospital). They did a fetal fibronictin test and it came back positive so I got transfered to a hospital with better resources just in case things progressed and for further testing.

They said the baby is doing great and is developing great but they dont think its labor right now (THANK GOD!!!) but they said that because of the positive test result labor could start in the next 2 weeks or I could last right up until my due date. The cramping has since stopped so they let me come home from the hospital.

So now I'm just waiting and hopeing that labor doesnt start anytime soon and taking it very easy. This baby seems really determined to come early and or try to give its momma a run for her money :P Its hard to know when its a first baby what things are supposed to feel like and whats normal or not.. But I guess its always better to err on the side of caution and get things checked out... especially with the way this little one has been behaving :P

Thanks again for you help and advice Its nice to be able to chat to someone who actually understands whats going on.. it really helps take the worry out of things. we tried so hard for this baby ... and even though I can't wait for its arrival.. I hope it just holds on a little longer :)

Good to hear that your little one is doing great-- that must be a relief for you.

Take it VERY easy for the weeks that follow!

Hi Anon,

Sorry, I just realized that it says you are only 18 weeks pregnant on your title.

I'm not a doctor, but as a mom, I would just take off of work completely. I understand that some of us cannot take off of work but it does sound like you have tried very hard to conceive. It may be in your best interest to at least take off this whole week that your doctor is out for and then consult with him when he returns. But if you are going to stay at home then that means no cleaning, no cooking, no standing for long periods of time-- otherwise it defeats the purpose of taking off from work.

Please keep us updated :-)

I havent updated in a long time so i figured I should .... My Dr. took me off work completly and I have great benifits so I didnt loose much pay being off this whole time. I am now 30 wks... and the end is coming quicker then I expected. . The cramping still comes and goes and being sick has never gone away... not to mention now the heart burn has kicked into overdrive... but despite all of my discomforts the baby is doing great which makes every ache, pain, sleepless night due to bathroom breaks and trying to get comfortable worth it

Being off work and on partial bed rest is very challenging... its involved many books way to may day time tv shows and old movies. Although It was great being able to online shop for great deals for baby! There is lots to be had at a great bargain if you shop around .. and with nothing but time to kill .. i had lots of fun doing it :)

Can't wait for this little bundle of joy to arrive... So thankful that the little one decided to stay put this long... knowing my luck after praying so hard for the baby to stay put... it wont want to come out on time :P

Hi Anonymous,

How far along are you? If you are not at least 37 weeks along, please remain on bed rest and drink LOTS and LOTS of water. Dehydration can trigger contractions. If you normally drink 8 glasses of water a day-- double the amount.

You will be getting up to go to the bathroom but it's very important that you stay hydrated. It will also help prevent urinary tract infections which can be common in pregnancy and can also cause contractions.

If you begin experiencing contractions that are less than 5 minutes apart and get progressively worse and not better, please return to L&D.

Please keep us posted,

Rosa

I am only 18 weeks pregnant... the Doctor i saw said to stay on bed rest until the contractions stop... and then it would be fine to return to work... but I'm almost wondering if I should be off work entirely... My family Doctor is on vacation this week so i wont be able to talk to him for awhile. I will up the fluid intake for sure.... I ve been drinking water and lots of juices and gatoraide and hot tea (decaf). Hopefully something works to keep this baby inside. The Dr did say that he wants to measure my cervix at the next ultrasound to see if i have an incompetent cervix but he said that putting in a stich or anything like that would be of no help at this point. Its just frustrating when you dont know what to do... and i want this baby to stay put.. we worked really hard to have this baby (had endometriosis removed in march) and i dont want anything to happen to him or her.
