Q:

Pain in back of legs & knees after sex

I have severe pain running down the backs of both legs (from my sitting bones down hamstrings) & knees after having sex. When I sit, it's dull & not as bad, but when I'm up it is awful! It starts within minutes of finishing sex and lasts at least half a day. Have never had this problem before. I am pregnant if that makes any difference, but haven't had this issue with past pregnancies. It's taking the fun out of having sex with my husband. Is there anything I can do to avoid or at least ease the pain?

Same problem here! It started around 3 months into my pregnancy and hasn't gone away. I also have noticed it seems to be worse with ejaculation. I have teased my husband that I'm allergic to his sperm. Standing up in the shower my legs just ache and ache and ache! It's awful, but I sure am thankful that's all i'm complaining about and we have a healthy pregnancy!

I am desperate for info on this, updates that might lead to solutions...

A few minutes AFTER finishing with intercourse I get very intense pain from lower butt down back and inside of each thigh to back of knee. Better if sitting or lying down, horrible if trying to stand or walk. Lasts for hours.

Started after my first pregnancy, didn't think it was related. Continued through and after second pregnancy, baby is now almost a year old.

Mentioned to obgyn, who thought it was weird and recommended looking into acupuncture or chiropractor. Don't have any other problems or symptoms.

Would love to hear from anyone who had problem continue AFTER pregnancy and learn about anything that did or didn't work... Anywhere I can get more info?

Anonymous,
I too have continued to have this pain after pregnancy though not as severe and usually only during my period. I have found this link to be the most helpful and make the most sense: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cystocele/DS00665/DSECTION=causes
I would suggest trying Kegels; I dont do them faithfully as I should and they dont make it go away but they seem to take the edge off. Hope this helps.

Anon - You might want to go to the homepage of the site and seek information using our Ask or Share feature. Comments made that way are far more visible to our 12,000+ members than comments that are within existing threads. Hopefully others would then see your request for information and respond. Pat

I have been experiencing horrible leg pain after sex as well. I'm now 6 months pregnant but it has been occurring for the past couple months. It starts immediately after & can last for hours. Typically it dulls while I'm sitting but is extremely painful if I'm standing up or moving around. I'm guessing it might have to do with being in the missionary position during sex but I honestly have no idea. I hadn't brought it up to my dr (not sure why) but plan to at my next appointment. This is not my first pregnancy & I don't recall ever experiencing this pain before. If I find any additional information from my doctor, I'll pass it on. I was glad to see I'm not the only one dealing with this. Please let me know if anyone finds anything else out. I pray this ends after the baby is here because it really doesn't help my sex life...which isn't good on the marriage. :) Take care, everyone.

I had this with my last two pregnancies - not the first, and it got worse with each one. Like others in the discussion, it was not a problem when we used a condom. My midwife told me that it was the prostaglandins in my husband's semen causing a contraction-like reaction that radiated down my legs. Mine ended immediately after my kids were born. I know it is a bummer to use condoms while you are pregnant, but that solved the problem for us!

Thank you to everyone for sharing. I am relieved to hear from others with the same symptoms. I am 26 years old and 21 weeks into my second pregnancy and had nothing like this with the first one. My Dr. just suggested sitting down (who can do that!?) or icing the low back, but she was thinking sciatic nerve. So I'm not much help, but maybe one more voice of encouragement. :) Thanks again.

I have this!!! It started with my first pregnancy, got better after (although never went away totally) and is now worse during my second pregnancy. I suspect that it is related to varicose veins - both those in the legs and possibly having them "down there" too.
Although this is just my own diagnosis... my doc has been pretty useless on this so far.

Did you ever get an answer to this? I'm experiencing the same thing and it's horrible!

Hi Anon - If you go back to the start of this thread you' ll find several others with similar symptoms who've found different causes including having a cystocele. The other information may help you and may also spark other questions. If you'd like to write back again after reading the thread, and provide more information on exactly what you're experiencing, we'll work to help you find answers.
Thanks, Pat
