I don't always "cough" but more like clearing my airway and it always produces mucus. This has been going on several months, maybe a year. I'm starting to worry. I am a smoker, about a pack per day and I'm a 66 year old female. Thanks

Hello Anonymous,
I would like to welcome you to the EmpowHER community and thank you for reaching out to us for advice with your health concern.
Toxins found in cigarettes are irritating and can be the cause of the cough along with increased mucus production. However, considering that this has been going on for a year and you are a smoker, I think scheduling an appointment with your primary care physician is in order.
Anonymous, please be evaluated by your doctor. A physical examination, pulmonary function test, and any diagnostic screening such as a chest x-ray can pick up any early signs of disease.
