Who doesn't love picking blackheads?! Well maybe I am just strange, but there certainly is something satisfying about getting those little dirty things out of your skin. Who knows how long they were in there in the first place! Will picking these little guys cause scarring?

Hi Lauren

Thanks for your post!

You can indeed scar your face from picking at it, whether it's acne, blackheads or any irritants on your face. I know it's tempting for some people to pick them and if you do, here is how to do it safely:

Give your face a 10 minute steam bath or do it after a warm shower or bath so that your skin is moist and soft. Don't pick at them without doing this first.  Exfoliate.

Then gently (gently!) surround the blackhead with a finger on each side and push up gently. The blackhead should pop. If it doesn't after a few tries, leave it alone - it's isn't ready! Persistence can cause damage to the skin around the blackhead.

Use an electric face brush afterwards for a good cleaning.

Do you know you can buy a specific tool to help with this? Check at a beauty supply store or ask for recommendations at a salon, but your fingers and the above method should work well.

Will you let us know if you have success?
