VIDEO - HERSTORY: Sandra Shares Her Reaction To Her First Menstrual Cycle

Sandra recalls when she had her first menstrual cycle and how she reacted to it.

Sandra:
I was very young when I started my period. I was 11 years old, and I was horrified and mortified and I did not tell my mother. And, I see stories or movies or books where it’s such a joyous occasion in the home, where Mom goes out and they do something special, or Dad takes out the daughter for ice cream or something. And it was not that way in my home because I was so embarrassed at 11 years old to have my period and I was way ahead of everyone.

I tried to hide it. My mother did the laundry and she figured it out and she never talked to me about it. She brought me a little brochure and set it on my bed, and I was supposed to read it and know everything there was to know about having a menstrual cycle and dealing with all the hormone changes from that point. And because there are so many girls nowadays who are having earlier and earlier periods, whether it’s being contributed to hormones in our diet or milk or whatever it is, the girls are getting younger and younger.
