I am 53 years old and have been having my monthly periods regularly. I have just got my IUD removed. I have been feeling very restless and uneasy for the last three months and my doctor said i was having peirmenopausal symptoms. My doctor has prescribed livial. After having checked the side effects of this drug, i am reluctant to take it. Also what happens once I stop this drug?

Dear Narmin,
Thanks so much for your question and welcome!
Peri or menopausal symptoms are varied but certainly can include unease and restlessness. Livial - a synthetic steroid - is used to help with these menopausal symptoms. It can guard against osteoporosis and replace hormones that restore comfort that is otherwise missing, due to fatigue, hot flashes, vaginal dryness and more.
However, as you mentioned, it comes with some serious warnings. The risk of breast cancer increases significantly as well as possible complications of the liver and other organs, weight problems, facial hair and mood disturbances.
Based on your own personal medical history, you can evaluate the risks and benefits of taking this medication. Some of the things that will taken into account will be:
-a family history of cancer
-obesity
-history of heart problems
-issues with cholesterol
-epilepsy
-clots
There are other options available including bio-identical hormones, changes in diet and exercise and more. Talk to your doctor about these options, combined with your own medical history and don't take any medication without a full evaluation of the risks and benefits to YOU. Doctors can write as many prescriptions as they want but the risks are all on you, so take your time and do your research before deciding on what's best in your case.
Speaking of natural hormones. we have a very busy link regarding Sottopelle that I think you should take a look at. You can find it here : http://www.empowher.com/community/share/sottopelle
Let me know what you think!
