Understanding Brain Surgery

Last August, my mother underwent an eight hour surgery to remove an olfactory neuroblastoma that had spread from her nasal cavity to her frontal lobe. A few weeks after the surgery, an infection formed where the tumor had been, and her forehead was removed. During the second week of September, she will be undergoing another round of surgeries to remove metastases in the lymph nodes and put in a new forehead.

Five years ago, my mother began to experience nasal congestion, occasional nosebleeds, and pressure in the nasal passages. It was thought to be due to seasonal allergies, and there was slight improvement when she was treated with allergy medication.

According to the American Brain Tumor Association 52,236, Americans were diagnosed with brain tumors in 2008 and 22,000 of the tumors were malignant. This disease affects family and friends as well as the patient. It is important to seek diagnosis and treatment early.
