Dr. Giraldi discusses where testosterone originates in females and the role that it plays in their bodies.

Dr. Giraldi:
It comes from adrenal glands and come from the ovaries, and most of it comes from the adrenal glands. It provides them with what we usually connect with the male characteristics. It gives you sexual drive. It gives you more energy and also have some benefits on the bones, the strength of your bones and the muscles, it gives you muscles. So it’s a little like the masculine characteristics.

Dr. Annamaria Giraldi, M.D., Ph.D., specializes in female sexual dysfunction. Her research interests include the connection between diseases and female sexual function, and the treatment of sexual desire problems in women.

Dr. Giraldi is associate editor for The Journal of Sexual Medicine. She is a member of the European Society for Sexual Medicine and the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health.
