Candace describes how a woman can advocate for her hair with her doctor when she notices it starting to thin.
Candace:
When a woman finally really realizes that she has something going on she should contact her physician and he may not, he or she may not ask the questions that needs to be asked. So she should go in prepared to be her own best advocate. Have a list of medications that you are taking. Have a list of the symptoms that you know are going on. Be armed to be able to answer whether or not you’ve had any major stress in your life, if your menses are heavy, if you’ve had a baby recently – anything that can possibly help the physician make the differential diagnosis of hair loss.
There’s many types of hair loss for women. We are not as simple as men. Men’s pretty well genetic, runs in the family, you know, it’s just easy. If your doctor kind of fluffs you off or says, “Just go try some Rogaine; see how that works for you,” I would ask for a referral to a dermatologist. I would ask for possibly another doctor because you have to find somebody who can work with you. You need your doctor to be your best advocate.
