The Power of Small Group Work – A Personal Story

This week I have been participating in a conference geared toward increasing my effectiveness at leading small groups using mind-body techniques. I have been amazed at the power of these groups to help people realize stumbling blocks in their lives and create solutions for them. These realizations have released stressful thoughts that have been present in some of the participants for a long period of time. I have also noticed how quickly people have been able to open up about themselves in this group because a safe and supportive space has been created for them to examine their thought processes. The success of the group has helped me to envision how different types of small group work could powerfully help shift some of my patients to deeper levels of healing physical and emotions diseases. It makes me excited about new opportunities for me and my patients to explore.

As I was driving home one night I remembered all of the small group work that I participated in during my twenties and how through my own group processes I made several pivotal decision about the direction of my life. I have experienced both physical and emotional healing through my group experiences and I thought I would share a few of my insights with you now. I participated in several one year seminars, which were groups that met once per month for a year to help explore emotional issues and patterns that were showing up in my life. This particular day I was driving to Richmond, about 90 miles away to meet with my group, and I just didn’t feel well. I didn’t have anything contagious but I was extremely tired, with a headache, body aches, and sinus congestion. I had a difficult week at work and in my personal life. After talking about my week and listening to others we did a breathing exercise for about an hour. After the exercise I felt substantially better and by the end of our 8-hour day, I was a new woman. It was incredible--with no medication, just breathing deeply, I was cured.

In a different one year seminar I learned to let my male-female relationship go because it was not serving either of us the way we wanted it to and I decided to pursue my passion for naturopathic medicine by applying and getting accepted to naturopathic medical school.

In both cases the support of the small group and the mind-body techniques that were used help me move toward the best path for me at the time.
