Ellen Schneiderman, R.N., shares what will happen once a woman's water breaks and what a woman can expect immediately after giving birth.
Nurse Schneiderman:
When you are thinking about whether or not your membranes have ruptured, or your water has broken, it would be a clear kind of fluid. It should not have any kind of odor to it. It would feel different than if you have just urinated and it’s important that you call your doctor if you think that your water has broken because you should come to the hospital and have that assessed because if your membranes have been ruptured for too long then you are prone to get an infection and that could be dangerous for your baby.
If everything is good and her baby is crying and seems fine, we really encourage skin-to-skin bonding here at Desert. That means that we are going to take your baby and we are going to put him or her right on your chest.
We are going to dry him/her off right with you because we know that skin-to-skin bonding elicits some responses that have lifelong effect on the baby. Your baby knows you the best. He or she knows your smell and your taste and can hear your voice and we know that that is one of the best things for the brain development and sensory development and the bonding and attachment between you and your baby. So that’s what we encourage here at Desert, for you and your baby to have that experience right away as soon as your baby is born.
