Dr. Harner:
The usual way that it presents is in the acute setting. The athlete or patient tears the MCL from a grade 1, 2, grade 3, and they have immediate pain. They get swelling and stiffness, and that takes awhile to settle down depending on the grade of tear; grade 3s take much longer; grade 1’s quicker.
