Christina explains if the sudden deaths of her sister and brother-in-law increased the severity of her postpartum depression symptoms with her fourth baby.
Christina:
I have a 4-month-old baby, and so this is my fourth baby, and this time I haven’t experienced it despite a traumatic turn of events. Four weeks before she was born, my sister died suddenly in an accidental death, and her husband had died two months before that, and they had two children, two young boys.
So three weeks before I had this baby, we adopted, took in my nephews. They became my sons, and so within a matter of three weeks we went from three children to six children. So the whole birth and postpartum experience this time was very surreal and kind of caught up with everything else going on, and I think that because of the trauma and everything going through that, I had a lot of risk factors.
I was very worried that I was going to have a really intense postpartum depression again, but luckily I knew by then, by this time I was really an expert on it, and I knew how to put my ducks in a row, so to speak. And I got a therapist right away before the baby came, and I called friends and set up help with the childcare and cleaning my house and helping me do laundry and someone to come over and watch the baby so I could sleep. This experience has been a lot better, despite all the other factors involved.
