To stretch or not to stretch

ASKED by Tina T on March 14, 2008 - 8:07am

Here's an article from the New York Times that says the benefits of stretching are iffy. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/13/health/nutrition/13Best.html?_r=1&oref...
This killed me because I dedicate one solid hour a week to stretching and I feel like a million bucks when I'm done . But I know some people argue that stretching overrated. Do you stretch before or after a workout? And if you don't stretch, what are the benefits of skipping the stretch?

One doctor in this report is stating that stretching can be harmful which I don't believe at all. Unless you are going over the top with stretching, how on earth can it cause injury?

Stretching feels very good for most people and makes most people feel more ready for a workout, when done before exercise, and makes them feel more relaxed when they stretched after and helps them wind down. And the benefits of yoga (which is one big stretch!) are very clear.

So I say stretch!
