Q:

Am I at a risk for getting pregnant?

I have been taking birth control for almost four months now. My period has been a little irregular. Since I am just starting birth control, the second month, my period came a week earlier and was more spotty. This month was my third month and my period came a week early again, but there was also spotting before starting my period. Me and my boyfriend recently had sex while I was on my period and we didn't realize the condom broke inside of me. Do I have a risk at getting pregnant or should I be alright?

Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for reaching out to us with your question.

You were not at risk because you have been taking oral contraceptives regularly for four months, but most importantly, you had your period.

The risk of becoming pregnant peaks during the period of ovulation. Oral contraceptives prevent ovulation. Even if you were not on birth control, by the time your period starts ovulation has occurred.

Regards,
Maryann
