Another "Pregnant? or just Stress-induced missed period?" question

The start of my most recent period was on Feb 26 - projected ovulation date being March 14, projected next period March 28 (via MyMonthlyCycles, where I have been keeping track of my period for 1 year). Average cycle - 30 days.

We had protected intercourse on March 3 and 24. The condom didn't break; slipped down maybe an inch but we pushed it right back up.

Now my period is 3 or 4 days late (depending if you count the 28th), with no usual signs of cramping etc that I normally get. Took two HPT's and both came out negative. Discharge looks normal, no tenderness of breasts or anything. I have had a little bit of an upset stomach but I think I may just be getting sick - I am under quite a bit of stress.

I know it's unlikely that I am pregnant, but I am paranoid since I can't afford to have a child right now. I have heard that stress really can throw off a regular period (I have been regular for 8 years now), but I have a hard time believing it since I am so paranoid... help? I don't know what's wrong with me!

Have a GYNO appt coming up in a month, but I'm the type of person who likes to know without going to the doc! It sure would be nice if my period would come!

Hello Anonymous,

I hope that your girlfriend has gotten her period by now. I do not think there was any risk for pregnancy.

Maryann

Hello, I recently gave birth to a boy 4 months ago in June. I was breastfeeding him for 3.5 months. During the third month I was slowly introducing him to the bottle. I had my first period the 16th of September and it lasted until the 20th of September. My husband and I had protected sex during my fertile days and a few times this month. I have been very busy, stressed, and had gone to Vegas this month. I haven't received my period yet. I took a HPT and it came out negative. Could it be due to me stopping breast feeding/stress, etc. or am I pregnant? With both my kids I tested 2 days after my projected period date and they came out positive. With this one, it's negative.

To the anonymous posters:

As stated below, high stress levels cause an increased secretion of cortisol. High levels of this hormone can cause periods to start late.

Pam

Hi I'm seventeen and had protected sex last saturday. The condom didn't break nor did he precum or cum. I'm freaking out because at first wen we were messing around, it made my period regular. I would come on the sixteenth of every month but Now its the 19 of October and I still don't have it. Should I go get a test? And I did have a very stressful week last week and I was awfully tired and had really bad headache. The only PMS symptom I have is my slightly sore breasts.

Hello Anonymous,

Thank you for your question. Start by taking a home pregnancy test.

High stress levels cause an increased secretion of cortisol. High levels of this hormone can cause your period to start late.

My girlfriend and I are worried that she might be pregnant. She uses a period tracker, and it said it should be here Sunday. It's Monday now, and it's not here yet. She's usually a day or two before the tracker says she should be, which is why we're worried. We had sex a few times in the past month (twice while she was fertile), but used a condom every time, and it never broke (that we know of, I do a cursory check before and after). She had been having her regular pms symptoms for a few days now (fatigue, irratibility, acne, cramps, white discharge, sexual arousal), but no flow. Her cramps are in her back mostly, but they don't hurt as much as usual.
Is it likely that she is pregnant? She had been under a lot of stress this month (her grandma died, she flew cross country to be with her family, and now she had a ton of work due), and I think that may be why she's late, but we're both still very concerned.
Thanks for your help.

Hello Anonymous,

Thank you for your question. High stress levels definitely impact a woman's menstrual cycle and can cause a delay in the start of her period.

If it will give you both peace of mind, your girlfriend could take a home pregnancy test. She can test today using an early response pregnancy test.

Regards,
Maryann
