Guide

Hello ravali133,

Welcome again to EmpowHER. I am glad you asked this question.

If you want to practice safe sex and not become pregnant, you must use birth control. Options include oral contraceptives or birth control pills, having an IUD inserted and getting a Depo-Provera injection every three months. Your partner must wear a condom, from start to finish every time you have sex.

To know when you are most likely to become pregnant, you need to understand your menstrual cycle.

The first day of your period is day one of the new menstrual cycle. It ends on the day before you start your next period. Use a calendar to keep track of your periods.

You are most likely to become pregnant if you have unprotected intercourse during ovulation. You need to track ovulation. You're potentially fertile beginning five days before you ovulate through the day of ovulation, although you're much more likely to get pregnant if you have sex during the final three days of this window.

To estimate when you'll ovulate, count back 14 days from when you expect your next period. Your fertile window includes the day you ovulate and the preceding five days.

ravali133, having unprotected intercourse outside of this fertile window might be "safe" but I urge you to use protection. Don't take a chance.

Regards,
Maryann
