A very good winter activity that burns calories is cross-country skiing. Spending one hour at this sport expends between 500 to 760 calories. This is a good aerobic exercise for conditioning both your upper and lower body muscles. You will need cross-country skis, which are less expensive than down hill skis, a good pair of cross-country boots and poles. Beginners may want to rent before investing in the equipment.

The numbers for running are grossly overstated. Running 1 mile burns closer to 100 calories, not 1,000!
