Natalie, diagnosed with trichotillomania, describes if friends comment on her physical appearance caused by pulling out her hair.
Natalie:
Yes, all the time; all the time comments. For about two years, all I did was wear headbands. So, people would always say, “Why don’t you ever do your hair,” or, “Can I do something with your hair? Oh wait, what’s this bald spot you have right here,” and I just have to make up a story.
I was at dinner with friends one night, and, my friend who didn’t know that I pulled said, “You have the shortest eyelashes I have ever seen. How do you even get mascara on those things?”
And we are with four other people so it was very, very uncomfortable for me, and I just kind of laughed and changed the subject, but that was something that I always remember. You know, whereas someone else might not remember that she said that to me, I will always remember that she said that, and it’s very hurtful.
