Colleen shares how ovarian cancer patients should advocate for themselves to receive the best possible treatment.
A woman almost needs to make that suggestion because it’s amazing to me that doctors don’t even make that suggestion, and of course nobody wants to throw out the word "cancer" to anyone at all. That’s just a given. I think women need to go and find symptoms and try to put some of their symptoms together themselves and advocate for themselves and maybe even make the suggestions to doctors who are just guessing and sending you through one test after another without making clear differential diagnosis before you.
They only lead you in one direction and not give you other options, and I know that that might seem scary to some women because again, nobody wants to hear the word "cancer" but you don’t want to leave something like this go for a long period of time. If it can be ruled out right away, perfect, that’s great; that’s exactly what we want. And if it can’t be, women still need to advocate for themselves earlier in the treatment plan.
