Dr. Ogden introduces herself and explains if there is more to sex than intercourse.

Dr. Ogden:
I am Dr. Gina Ogden. I am a sex therapist for many, many years, a marriage and family therapist. I created a huge survey, national survey called “Integrating Sexuality and Spirituality,” which is the very first to ask questions about what sex feels like and what it means in your life as distinct from how many times did you do what to whom.

I have several books out there. The last two are a book titled “Women who Love Sex” and a book titled “The Heart and Soul of Sex.” I am working on a book which will be out in July of 2008 titled “The Return of Desire.”

When women come to me for sex therapy, I think the sort of overarching question that they ask is, “Isn’t there something more to sex than just intercourse or just a mad dash to orgasm or just…” And then they will name these parameters of physical sexuality which is how we have been trained to think about sex in this culture.

And what I really hear them asking is, what about a heart-to-heart connection? What about flights of imagination and fantasy? What about pleasure, let alone no orgasm? What about ecstasy? What about feeling transported and transformed, really into another sphere?

Sexual experience is one of the few ways in this culture that we can burst the bonds of the culture and move out there body, mind, heart and spirit.
