Dr. Zarine Kotian recalls whether or not all sexually transmitted diseases present with visual warning signs and symptoms. Dr. Kotian is an obstetrician/gynecologist on staff at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Kotian:
Many sexually transmitted diseases are asymptomatic. For a male it’s very easy for them to see signs of sexually transmitted infections because their organs are external whereas women, our organs, are cervix, are all internal. So it’s very important that you get tested.

Things like chlamydia, gonorrhea, even herpes can be asymptomatic to the women. They might not think anything is wrong with them but unfortunately, chlamydia, gonorrhea; these infections can lead to future repercussions such as infertility. So it’s very important that you get these tested for when you see your obstetrician and gynecologist.

There is no reason for you to be scared about talking about your sexual activity or if you are nervous about having a sexually transmitted infection, no reason for you to be nervous to talk to your gynecologist. That’s what we are there for. This is what we see every day. Our goal is to make you better and to keep you healthy. So in order for us to do that you need to tell us if you have any signs or symptoms or any scares or anything else that you want to talk to us about.
