Dr. Zarine Kotian, an OB/GYN at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona, explains why it is important for young women to tell their doctors when they become sexually active and provides advice for minors who are concerned about sharing this information.

Dr. Kotian:
It’s important for young women to tell their doctors when they become first sexually active for many reasons. The first being to evaluate your risk factors for sexually transmitted infections, also to discuss any kind of contraception that may be needed. It’s important for us to know about your health so that we can keep you healthy in the future.

For a minor who is concerned about sharing her histories, especially about sexual activity with me, I do let the patient know that it is going to stay in the room; it’s not going to go to their parents or anybody outside that they don’t want to know about their health and about their activity.

It’s also very important for them to be honest with me so I can evaluate them, test them as needed, and also ascertain if they have any risk factors for any high-risk behavior that could possibly endanger their future health.
