Dr. Zarine Kotian shares how a woman can prepare to discuss birth control options with her gynecologist. Dr. Kotian is an obstetrician/gynecologist on staff at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Kotian:
When talking with your gynecologist about birth control options it is a good idea for you to come in with some notion of what you are thinking about. There are many types of birth control, from barrier contraception, such as condoms, diaphragms to non-hormonal options such as the IUD. There are also many hormonal options including birth control pills, the patch, the ring, implants, intrauterine devices, so there’s a lot of decisions to make.

If you are not good with taking something daily then the ring, the patch, the implantable devices are more of an option for you. The patient definitely has to think about what her long-term goals are. Does she need protection against sexually transmitted infections? Is she in a monogamous relationship, or she is in a monogamous relationship, but she doesn’t want any children for three or four or five years, the options are very different and that’s something that you will have to discuss with your doctor.
