Lisa explains how she coped with the fear of waiting to learn if she had thyroid cancer.
Lisa:
Handling the fear of waiting and waiting to see if you have thyroid cancer, the whole process, from the first scan to the removal and test of the thyroid probably took about two months.
You’re really on eggshells. Thyroid cancer is a very curable cancer. It rarely spreads outside the thyroid, but still wasn’t comforting to me because I had a 6-month year old son. Coming from a mother who died of cancer when I was 6 years old and diagnosed when I was 6 months old, it was really crazy and hit full circle.
It was really hard to stay grounded, which led to severe depression, having to take anti-anxiety drugs, Xanax, and it was really hard and difficult, it was really difficult to focus on my baby and I felt very guilty that I might have a cancer that could potentially kill you and that I would leave him in the same way that I felt that cancer had affected me when I was a child.
