Registered Dietitian Donna Simon explains how managing your diet with a food journal helps you succeed and discusses how Banner Gateway Bariatric Center helps you achieve your weight loss goals. Donna Simon is Bariatric Coordinator and Nutrition Specialist at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona.

Donna Simon, M.S., R.D.:
Food journaling definitely helps patients become more successful and not just bariatrics but what it is, is that you are becoming accountable.

You are taking responsibility of what you are putting in your mouth but not just writing down what you are eating but writing down your portion sizes, writing down the grams of fat, the calories. How many grams of protein?

You are becoming more aware and studies have shown that people that do food journals lose twice as much weight as those that don’t.

So food journaling is one of the important things to do when you are on any type of diet, even besides bariatric.

Banner Gateway’s bariatric program is so special because it’s a full program.

It encompasses not just the surgeon and the dietician, you know the bariatric nurse or the exercise physiologists and psychologists, we have a lot of family involvement and patient involvement – they are the most important part of our team.

And they are all welcome to attend our support groups and most of them do. They always bring some type of support whether it’s a child or a parent or spouse or a friend and we make that available to them.

As far as other programs I can’t compare them to because I haven’t checked their other programs. I just know what our program is about and we are working to be the best in Arizona.
