Registered Dietitian Donna Simon discusses the difference between what you might eat before LAP-BAND® surgery and what you might eat before gastric bypass surgery. Donna Simon is Bariatric Coordinator and Nutrition Specialist at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona.

Donna Simon, M.S., R.D.:
Hi, I am Donna Simon. I am bariatric coordinator as well as the dietician at Banner Gateway Bariatric Center.

We see patients all over Arizona, Alaska and New Mexico. We try to help them guide them through their process for weight loss surgery.

We start them with an informational seminar, then we do a initial consult with our patients and then we start our weight loss program with them. In addition to that we encourage them to attend our support groups.

We do a full three-hour education class. We give them education manuals, handouts. We are available five days a week, from 8:00 to 4:00 for questions, answers, emails.

We help whoever we can and even those that are not possibly candidates to bariatric surgery. We will at least guide them to where they could help with their weight loss journey.

No, both our pre-op diets are the same. It’s a two-week diet of four protein shakes that are high-protein, low-calorie, and clear liquids, which are caffeine-free, sugar-free and carbonation-free.

So it’s sugar-free Jell-O, sugar-free ice-pops, broth and we do allow tomato juice for the extra potassium.
