Q:

Could I be pregnant?

hey girls! I am in need of help because I am about to lose my mind from worry. My last period was September 22, 2009 and my boyfriend and I had our brief first time on October 27, 2009. I have always been regular but I have not had a period since September. I keep thinking I could be pregnant but neither my boyfriend nor I think I could be because he pulled out and it was all over the sheets (which we quickly stripped and washed.) We went slow so that we could control how excited we got and maybe some pre-cum came out but not much at all. I have been worrying ever since and I've taken 3 hpt's and they've all come out negative. I feel like my period is here but nothing is coming out. I've been getting a little cramping, no spotting, no sore breasts, no sickness whatsoever, or anything. I have been under a lot of stress lately with this and other things that are going on in my life, but I'm scared out of my mind. What's wrong with me???

UPDATE: Eight negative pregnancy tests later, seven pounds lighter, and practically about to lose my mind...Aunt Flo decided to finally come and pay me a visit last night! She has arrived and I'm breathing so much easier! The symptoms I was experiencing was PMS which occur 5-11 days before my cycle begins!
Thank you all so much for your support. I couldn't have made it through the last few days without your help! Thank you so much for everything! :-)

One other note: I'm assuming you aren't on birth control, right?

Be sure to use a condom next time you have sex, so you don't have to go through this agony and worry!

You said your boyfriend had some "pre-cum" a little, but that is actually ejaculation that you saw. "Pre-cum" or "pre-ejaculatory fluid" isn't something you notice coming out once he's excited. Pre-ejaculatory fluid is actually present on the tip of a man's penis when he first has an erection, and is just a few drops that sit on the penis (you won't see it "coming out"). Anything that is "coming out"...no matter the amount..is ejaculatory fluid and men can control this sometimes, and stop it before it gets to be too much, to then ejaculate again.

Does that make sense?

It's important to know the differences, because many women don't realize the "pre-cum" can be present when there is an erect penis, and does not matter if there has been stimulation or not. Pre-cum may contain sperm, so even inserting the tip of the penis way before any chance of ejaculation is still considered a moderate risk for pregnancy (due to the possible presence of semen in the "pre-cum" on the tip of the penis).

Dear Alison,
In answer to your first question, I am 21 years old and have not seen a GYNO in my life. Someone told me that I wasn't sexually active so there was no point in seeing a GYNO. So that's why I have not ever been to one. And yes, your explanation does make a lot of sense. I guess I just got really lucky this time, but I told my boyfriend we shouldn't push our luck. This was just once but I don't ever want to go through this agian. I've lost about 7 lbs. in the past 6 days just fretting about this. I've taken 2 more tests and both are negative so I'm up to 7 negative tests, no symptoms at all, and no period. so now all I can think of is that I stressed my body into lockdown. what do you think?

I'm wondering how old you are---have you started seeing a gynecologist yet?

You have missed your October period by almost 2 weeks, which can be normal for many girls and women. Some women have irregular periods; some may even miss a period one month. If you are still worried, you can call your family doctor or a gynecologist for an appointment.

Please know that if you are having any type of pain or other symptoms (you don't mention that you do), it would be a good idea to call a doctor. Otherwise, many GYN doctors aren't concerned about one missed period and no pregnancy.

You can stop taking pregnancy tests; you have missed your period and five negative pregnancy tests are very affirming...you can be confident in those results and focus on other things! Pay attention to your body, if you notice any symptoms. If you don't, then a missed period may be normal and OK for you. If you miss a period this month, then it would be suggested to call your doctor (even if you still have no symptoms).

well i took a fourth test last night and a fifth one this morning since I'm getting a little clear vaginal discharge and both of those have come back negative. So now I'm up to 5 negative home pregnancy tests and Aunt Flo still has not come. :-(

yes thank you! it's helpful to know and I will try calming down. I have read articles that talk about periods being very late anyway due to stress or just because it happens sometimes. I will keep you updated on what happens. I keep having negative tests and everyone I know says that I'm not pregnant. I'm so paranoid that I still can't help but wonder and fret. I hope nothing is wrong. I will let you know!

i'm going through the same thing but the only differences is that i havent taken a pregnancy test. I talked to one of my teachers at school but since i do have some of the symptoms she recommended me to take a test. but she also told me that if i wouldn't had does syptoms that it may be the stress just thinking of being pregnant. so i believe that in your case is just that your too stress out. try relaxing for a while, take a break, exercise, eat healthy or something that could help. hopefully this is helpful enough to you. thank you
