Q:

Are there any over the counter remedies for actinic keratoses?

I have two actinic keratoses on my forehead and had my dermatologist freeze the first one about 2 months ago but it has returned and is now bleeding when I wipe my face with a washcloth. Now I've formed a new small one right below it. I have no insurance now and can't afford a Dr.'s appointment so I was hoping there would be an over the counter remedy. Thanks for your help,

Lise

Hi Anon,

Thanks for your post. Unfortunately, none of the treatments for Actinic Keratosis are over the counter. All either have to be prescribed or involve surgical procedures. I would advise that you try to look for a public health clinic to be treated for your actinic keratosis since it is always important to have skin conditions treated by a doctor. If you need help finding a clinic in your area, please let us know.

I have sought home remedies for actinic keratosis and located 2 of them; however, they are more expensive than the doctor visit... assuming that where you live MD's give a good discount to self-pay patients. one remedy is crocodile oil, or Repcillin. the other is Perrin cream.
