ask: Can IUDs cause heart palpatations or arrythmia?

I had an IUD inserted a few years ago after having my second child. Shortly after, I began having irregular heartbeat and was eventually diagnosed with SVT. After two heart surgeries and nearly two years of medications, I still had the palpatations. However, after having my IUD removed, I noticed the palpatations stopped. I know this may sound crazy, but can IUDs cause heart problems? Have other women had this experience?

Hi, Anon, and welcome to EmpowHer. We're really glad you found us.

What an experience! I can't believe you have had two heart surgeries and two years of medication for something that has now gone away without your IUD in. I will be interested to see if any other women have had this kind of experience.

You didn't say what kind of IUD you had? It will help us when we're trying to research side effects for you.

I'VE HAD THE IUD IN FOR A LITTLE OVER A YEAR NOW AND I HAVE TO AGREE WITH YU THAT MY HEART BEAT HAS BEEN OUT OF THIS WORLD AND I'M CURRENTLY SEEING A HEART DOCTOR FOR THE RAPID HEART BEAT I'M HAVING BECAUSE OF THE IUD. I'VE BEEN EXPERIENCING THESE VERY WEIRD HEADACHES ALSO FROM THE IUD. MY MOM WANTS ME TO GET RID OF IT AND I'M GOING TO DO JUST THAT. I HAD TO WEAR A HEART MONITOR FOR THE LAST 24HRS. AND THE DOCTOR READ WHAT THE MONITOR HAS RECORDED AND SAID THAT AT ONE POINT MY HEART RATE WAS ALMOST OVER 200 SERIOUSLY I KNEW THAT WASN'T GOOD.

Well about 5 years ago I got the iud in and everything has been fine up until about 2 years ago and now I am having these very very uncomfortable heart bets that are like a extra throbbing all threw my head arms and every time I have the palpitations which is now every day that makes me feel so bad that get me in a bad mood and I have had 2 EKGs done put on a heart monitor heart x-rays of the heart and stress tests the Dr gave me anxiety pills as well anti depression pills and really don’t feel like I’m depressed went into see her once again because after 2 years of this it’s still there and its horrible Dr then said that maybe I should make an appt with valley mantel health and that was it for me with that Dr when you’re in pain you see a Dr and if you think that you have a mantel issue you go to a mental health dry I have two kids and feel that since the palpitation are there I’m always feeling so bad that I’m not being the mom that I used to be now I’m see a new Dr and now finally getting an Mri done and when I told him about the iud he stated that really would not have anything to do with it which I really think otherwise and not only ever since I’ve had I am always get a thing called Bactria vaginocess that never never in my like had had it till the iud .

Thank you for your question. I was intrigued by your story but unaware of any relationship between IUD's and irregular heart rhythms (arrythmias). There are a few reports of certain types of abnormal heart rhythms during INSERTION of IUD's or other procedures involving manipulation of the cervix. These are most commonly slowing of the heart rate (bradycardia), a process similar to passing out during straining (vasovagal reaction). There are rare reports of the heart speeding up but not specifically SVT. I found no reports of arrythmias occurring after the IUD had been in place.

That said, there is no way to know for sure whether there is a connection in your case. The most important thing, of course, is that you are no longer having palpitations. If your palpitations return, you should return to your cardiologist for further evaluation. Good Luck!!!

I had the Mirena IUD since September and sometime during the winter months I noticed that my heart was going crazy when I went to bed at night and my blood pressure was all over the place but not normal. I was also very tired and MEAN, which is very unusual for me. I also was having headaches, back pain, severe bloating, etc. I gained twenty-five lbs. in five months because I was constantly hungry. I finally figured out that it all started changing when I had the IUD inserted. I had it removed two days ago, the heart papitations have stopped, my blood pressue is getting better with each passing day and I am not as bloated (per my clothes). It is amazing how bad I felt and how much time I spent lying down. I am only 44 and should be full of energy. Hopefully by the end of summer, I will be almost back to normal.

Hi, Anon,

I don't know what to say, other than Wow, what an experience. It is amazing that your heart palpitations, your fatigue, your headaches and weight gain were all seemingly linked to something like your IUD. And that you have had SUCH improvement in just two days.

Good for you for thinking back and figuring out when all your symptoms started. I would love it if you would come back and update us when a little more time has passed and tell us if you're doing even better. Would you?

Hi,
I'm glad I found this site... I had a Mirena IUD inserted about 7 months ago. Within the last 3 weeks I've experienced the same symptoms as the ladies on this forum described. I'm 31, I'm eating extremely healthy and I'm exercising (intense cardio) 4 times a week; no heart issues in my family. In my opinion I'm not the perfect candidate for heard diseases... Last week I did all the blood tests, tomorrow I'm scheduled to have my IUD removed and 3 days from now I'll do the 24 hours hart monitoring. If my hart issues stop after my IUD is removed I will go further and approach the manufacturer (Byers - if I recall well) for not explaining clearly the side effects of this "thing". Women like us with children, family and careers should not experience "2 heart surgeries' before realizing how harmful the Mirena IUD is.

I am 31 and at age 29 I had 2 heart attacks while on the IUD Mirena. 6 days ago I had to have an ICD implanted because of the permanent damage done to my heart from the 2 attacks.

OMG! I just had my copper IUD inserted 7 months ago, I never had heart problems, or heart disease in my family, 4 months ago i was in the hospital for the same thing as the previous woman with atrial fibrations of the heart, I figured it was the IUD! because thats when my symptoms stared, I made a appoint ment for removal. my obgyn said i was stupid to remove it because those are not symptoms with a IUD! I kept it in and still till this day I have the same symptoms wich get worse while on my period wich Iam for sure it is due to my IUD! I just made a appointment today for removal, this is very upseting and crazy we all have the same symptoms!!!!!!! I have to children, and Iam 28 years old ! thank you for the help ladies!!!!
