I am suffering from Gastric & Ulcer. Do it leads to Cancer? As my father & grand maa has suffered from Stomach Cancer (Pancreatic Cancer). Endoscopy has done to me on 07.02.2013. In that report there mild gastrics & 0.3 X 0.3 CM Active Ulcer. Is it to be dangerous or serious to my health? Kindly help your advice.

Hello Anon

Thanks for your post!

Gastric Ulcers can be very painful but this does not mean that they will lead to cancer.

Causes of Ulcers:

Upsets in the balance of stomach acid and digestive juices can lead to an ulcer. This can be caused by:

  • Bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) —common cause
  • Use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)—blocks the body's ability to protect the stomach lining; common cause
  • Diseases that cause acid production to increase, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Not all people that take NSAIDs or with H pylori infection develop ulcers.

Rare causes include:

Risk Factors

Risk factors for ulcer from H pylori infection include:

  • Sex: male
  • Race: Black and Hispanic
  • Lower socio-economic group
  • A crowded and unsanitary living environment
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Family history of ulcer disease
  • Type O blood

Risk factors for ulcer from anti-inflammatory drugs include:

What kind of treatment are you receiving for your ulcer at the moment?
