Hi izzy,
Sperm can live up to a week inside the body. However, Levonelle is a morning after pill that can be taken up to 3 days after having unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy from occurring. The reason why you have this window period is because although sperm can live for about a week, pregnancy is a process that takes about 7-10 days in total to occur. Many people believe that if you have sex on the night that you are ovulating, you will be pregnant by morning-- that is simply not true. As a matter of fact, in order to get pregnant it is best if you have already ovulated prior to having sex; that way the egg is waiting to be fertilized within the next 24 hours of ovulation.
With that being said, Levonelle is most effective when taken within hours of having sex so the longer you wait to take it the higher your chances of being pregnant are. Nothing is fool proof, not even these emergency contraceptives. But they were designed in case of emergency to give you that second chance.
All the best,
Rosa
