Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

All I know is my arm hurts 95% of the time and I want the pain to stop. I have been at this for 3 months and thats long enough. ML

jk421 -that's great news! I keep telling myself that this will pass eventually, it will just take time. Aleve in the morning and Demerol/Amytriptaline at night are making it bearable for my husband. He saw his doctor today who told him that was all that could be done. Mother Nature will take care of the healing.

this may be a dumb question but are Tylenol 3's a prescription med or is it over the counter?

I had my flu shot in October and woke up the next morning with pain that was unbearable to say the least. I did the doctor trick as you all have done and in the end here is what I am know:
1. You don't need an MRI or blood work
2. Specialist believes that to cause that much pain, the needle was put in to high and scratched the bone.
3. Tried all kinds of anti inflammatory drugs and none worked.
4. Here is what did work to relive the pain so I could function and sleep. 2 Ale-eve in the morning and two Tylenol 3's just after supper. Coordinated this with my doctor on the advise of the specialist.
5. Woke up the morning of January 3rd and the pain had subsided.
6. Haven't taken a pill since and life is good.

I am very anxious to hear about anyones test results that had an MRI! I think I am heading that way very soon. I was given the shot on 10-2-09 and have been suffering since. The pain was improving for a while there but this last week it has come back with a vigence. I just cannot believe this is happening to me..I am having a constant ache and sharp stabbing pains if I move my arm wrong. The pain also radiates to my shoulder and neck area. This is my right arm which is my dominate arm so that is making it worse. I can pin point exactly where the shot was given. I have been told by my dr as well as nurses that this shot was given to low. I long to have my life back this is effecting it greatly. My next step is the MRI so I am going to get it done and I will post as soon as I know anything. I sign my posts ML. Best wishes to each one of you. We are not alone there seems to be plenty of us in this position. ML

soooooooo, the bloodwork is JUST to rule out any infection? Hmmmmm, I shall call tomorrow and see if they have the results then. I suspicion she will prescribe anti-inflammatories but don't know ..............
I truly hope this gets better; I really do. Thanks for the info.

We have already been down this road, so I can answer your question. My husband had bloodword done right away to rule out infection. His white blood cell count was normal, so that's been ruled out. This was 3 months ago - very little progress since then but I guess any progress is good. Some days are better than others. He barely slept last night though.

Well, I went to the Dr. yesterday and she was a tad bit puzzled about my arm and the pain in it. She asked if I was allergic to anything like anti-inflammatories or not and I am not. I am a lil puzzled right now as all that she did was take some blood work to determine what? I have to admit I wasn't feeling well as I also went for a bad case of sinusitis as well. So can anyone tell me why the bloodwork and what it will tell?
