I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!
I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.
This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).
Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

Hi Ladies,I was just doing some research my self on pain in the left shoulder after a flu shot for my husband. He recently got his flu shot for the very first time in his life just two days ago and his now
December 16, 2009 - 9:29pmexperiencing a lot of pain in the left shoulder where they injected him. The pain that his experiencing,is a shooting pain up his shoulder to his neck. I was reading other sites and came across this forum off course about pain after a flu shot and the doctor responded to this woman who was having the pain. He/She said that it's something in the brachioplexus area, called parsonage-turner syndrome. This is usually a post viral or vaccination phenomena where one gets an inflammatory reaction in the brachioplexus and causes nerve damage to the nerves of the arm,an EMG would help make the diagnosis and recent history of viral infection or vaccination(flu shot). It is treated with medications and usually comes back normal. Have to be determined by neurological exam and EMG. I'm not so sure that the flu shot is for everyone, especially if it damages your nerves. Good Luck!

Hi Anon - I don't think we've seen that explanation before. It's quite interesting. Thanks for getting in touch, and I hope you'll keep us posted on your husband's progress. Hope he feels better soon! Take care, Pat

I'm back from the Chiropractor! It is indeed a reaction to the shot. He said a lot of his patients today were with the arm hurting. I just took a Tylenol PM and hope it will help me to sleep. I rarely take medications like that. In fact, I always have to throw away the expired bottle and buy another just to have current dates in my closet. It shows you how much I hurt!

I'm glad I found this site!

Are your pains continual since the shot? I had the usual pain at site of injection for two days, that went away. About a month later I had severe pain in arm, neck and upper back. I know this wasn't from a bad site of injection as I had the shot at a major medical center by a nurse. I think it was some sort of side effect. It lasted about a month, on and off, but did go away. I hope this gives promise to other people because at the time I felt it would never resolve. I am completely fine now.

I had the seasonal flu shot 5 weeks ago and my arm is so painful I feel sick! I can't sleep and I can't concentrate at work. I am going to my chiropractor today and will see what he says. I do not remember "doing" anything to my arm to cause this pain. I've never had this pain before.
December 15, 2009 - 3:53pmThis is unreal if it's from the shot. It's been 9 years since I had a flu shot for various reasons and I gave in and had the shot when I had a well-woman check up.
Oh dear.
Will write tomorrow to tell what the doctor says.

My Husband had a Flu Shot at the end of October and since then he has agonising pains in the upper arm.
December 14, 2009 - 7:48pmHe has been on anti-inflammatory drugs, had physio therapy, nothing helped. He now had an X-Ray and and MRI and nothing is showing. Next step is treatment to remove toxins from the body. I think it was a bad batch of Flu Vaccine, as so many people suffering from the same symptoms and so far no one has come up with a positive cure. Any advise would be appreciated.

I have to add myself to this list! I am amazed at how many others feel as I do! I received both the H1N1 and reg flu shot, one in each arm. The H1N1 hurt a lot for a day and now is no problem (4 weeks have passed) but the reg flu shot has gotten progressively worse. I am sure this happened to a much lessor degree before but never like this. I remember thinking as she was about to give the shot that she was aiming too high and boy did I feel pain and burning when she did it. It almost feels like the tip of the needle broke off in my muscle and occasionally is rubbing against the bone! I am sure that is not the case but that is what it feels like! Please keep posting your self help suggestions and other options as I am willing to try anything:) feel better all

Liz,
That's what I had thought at first, too. I ran a metal detector over my arm though, and no "beep" ;)
