Q:

Leadership/personality Concerns

Hi!

This question is probably an uncommon one on this website and isn't related to health. However, I thought I'll ask anyway and see if anybody is able to give me some assistance. I am a college student heading into my sophomore year and I am going to be a Resident Assistant (RA) as well. I am really excited to be an RA. I believe I will be a good RA because I am really helpful, understanding and pay attention to other people and their needs. However, I am by nature, an introvert and not someone who talks alot or is naturally seen as a leader. But I love meeting and getting to know new people and I believe this job has so many benefits and challenges that has the potential to help me grown as an individual. My question is, I am concerned about how people perceive me (I am small maid, quite thin etc...) and people seem to think that I am too innocent or too nice and strong... Does anybody have any advice, suggestions or anything in regard to my situation? No matter how assertive or engaging I get, people still do not see me as strong as I know I am and I don't want my kindness to be seen as weakness.

Thank you so much in advance!!

Confidence and faith in your abilities are the most important factors that you need to have. You can be successful if you utilize your skills properly and in a positive way. Planning about career, asking people about the challenges etc can be done so that you will get a clear path to follow so that you can reach your goal.

Hello Anonymous,

Believing in yourself. Love yourself. When faced with a challenge, embrace it and overpower it. If you need to reprimand a fellow student, do it and stand firm. Trust your instincts.

As a RA, you have a responsibility to the students on your floor or in your dorm building. You are not trying to win a popularity contest and be everyone's friend.

You can still be friendly, kind and outgoing. But, early in the semester, make it clear that there are rules and that these rules will be followed. Offenders will be reported.

I wish you the best and a successful sophomore year
