Q:

My nails are fragile, peeling and brittle. They have white indentations under the nailbed as if they are trying to separate. What could be causing this?

Guide

Abnormal nail conditions reflect a vitamin deficiency, a fungal infection, damage from prolonged exposure to detergents and water, side effect of certain chemotherapy drugs or an underlying medical condition.

A diagnosis cannot be made over the internet. You need to be evaluated by a dermatologist who can examine your fingernails and obtain a complete medical history from you. A nail sample (clippings of the effected nails) and blood test may be done to find the cause of your nail symptoms.
