Q:

Overheat causing headaches

Within 10-15 minutes of doing any type of activity that requires "energy", i end up sweating profusely and overheat. If I don't stop and cool off, i will get headaches that will lead to migraines if i don't catch it in time. During warm days, just being in temperatures more than 70 degrees cause me to sweat and get headaches. Due to this, I am forced to stay in indoors with the a/c (huge electric bills) and can not even go to a bbq! Does anyone know of this type of problem?

Note: I drink lots of water, i am not over-weight and I've had this issue since I was a child. It has gotten worse over the years.

I have had cluster headaches for about 15 yrs. Anytime I work in garden and get overheated I get the worst headache. I'm not sure if any of u are on oxygen but it is my life saver. Get to cool air use oxygen with a rebreather mask 15 liter regulator. Your dr has to write script but if u get clusters O2 is a must. I also take a preventative but doesn't seem to do a lot till I quit taking it! I get so frustrated, I can't be in the sun unless there is a cool breeze. I also take generic maxalt as a last resort. I just came in with a bad one and googled it. Not glad that all u suffer to but least someone understands.

Do you have naturally low blood pressure? If so, that could be why. Blood has to get pumped to your brain quickly to cool it off. If you have do not have strong blood pressure it has to work harder. We eat and drink things with sodium prior to going out into the heat or any activities outside. That is the only thing that helps. V8, Vitaminwater, hot chocolate make with powder, crackers...etc.

My doctor put me on nortriptyline for heat induced cluster migraine. I started out on 25mg and over time he increased the dose to 75mg. I was on that dose for 5 years and have been off the medication for 10+ years now and just this year the headaches started coming back. They are mild enough that getting into cool air, laying down and taking a nap and taking ibuprofen will kick it. Before taking nortriptyline I had cluster migraines every month for a solid week and more often in the summer since I was 13. I am now 41

Has anyone tried Amitriptyline (Elavil) for their heat induced migraines? Reading all these posts I could have written them myself bc they describe my migraines to a T!! My Dr. just prescribed Amitriptyline and I just wondered how others got along with it.

I have found that Daquil works for me. Tylenol and advil do not. My doctor thinks the heat triggers sinus pressure and the decongestant plus pain reliever is the key.

As I am sitting here reading all of your comments , I am in complete shock!!!
I thought I was all alone with this condition.
I can't do anything that over heats my body or I will suffer with migraines , and it will put me down for the rest of the day. When I am over heated at all I get so sick with a migraine that all I can do is go to bed in the dark. No medication helps at all. I mowed the yard yesterday it was 70 degrees and a beautiful day, I thought I would be okay....but I was not!!!
It is so frustrating that I can't live a normal life due to this condition. No one in my life understands , it is real and I can't help it. This is the only place that I have found people who understand the condition of over heated migraines.
I feel like I have tried everything and there is no answer no resolve.
I am thankful I am not alone in this and would love to hear more about anyone who has found a resolve.
Blessings,
Veronica

Same thing for me. Once I cool down, that's when the headache kicks into high gear. I have had this since I was a child. While it am in the heat, my face turns bright red and I can feel the pounding start. I wear hats, stay in the shade when possible and drink plenty of water and Gatorade. Nothing helps. If I get overheated doing housework or exercising, same thing happens. I love to be outside and garden and be active, but I pay for it later.

I am 21, just moved to Colorado, and would love to be out hiking and adventuring with my roommates, classmates, etc. Instead I am stuck avoiding exertion and heat. This weekend I went on a hike that was wonderful, and I thought I was being careful not to overheat (got a cooling towel for my neck, camelback so I can carry more water comfortably) but on the drive home I started getting hit and by the time I got to my house it was all I could do to get inside and crawl into bed. Cue nausea, hot and cold sweats, and wanting to lie perfectly still because that's the only way the pain in my head fades. This started in the last few years for me. I am so grateful to have found this forum. I hate my body for doing this to me, and it is some relief to know that it's not just me. You have given me hope that I might not suffer this for the rest of my life, and I am going to see a doctor soon to hopefully find a medical solution. Living in Colorado I have tried self-medicating with marijuana but the one time I've tried so far it just made me more nauseous.
