Pregnant or not pregnant?!

Hi,I am a married 21 years old girl and I am experiencing some problems which I want to share..I've been experiencing pregnancy like symptoms since last month but I have not missed my period yet. This all started back last month when my usually regular periods were delayed by 5days and the following month by 6-7days,this is unusual for me as this has never happened before, they usually come around same date every month or 1-2days before or after..Now,last month they came with painful cramps which started one week before(I usually have mild ones before my periods) and then I experienced mood swings, bit of a nausea, breast tenderness etc I took a pregnancy test 2-3weeks after and it came out negative..(another thing is we only have unprotected sex in my safe days and use either condoms or pull out method in not so safe days).I have been having stomach problems, pain in stomach, upset stomach and i don't know if this is related to it or not but sometimes there is a little bleeding from my gums which never happened before.

Please bear with me I know this is a long ques but I want to tell each tiny detail so I could get a satisfying answer and put my mind at ease.
Now this month my periods are delayed by 5-6days as i mentioned earlier and they are lighter than usual but its not spotting or light bleeding, they are just not as heavy as I am used to having.I'm having aversions to certain foods and some cravings.I went to see a doctor and she says she will have my blood test and ultra-sound done and it could be due to early miscarriage/cysts or just stress related.I have moved to a different country four months ago and I have been travelling a lot also so may be this could be the reason. These problems are really worrying me so I would appreciate if anyone could give me a good advice .

Hi Jo-Annie

Birth control prevents pregnancy while you are taking it. Theoretically, you can get pregnant during the week off. I'm not saying it is common, but I am saying you should use another method of birth control during that time to be certain.

Using the pill can change your cycle a bit; sometimes it gets lighter, sometimes there is spotting at a time in the cycle when you normally don't have it. So this may be normal.

As far as bleeding after sex, that can indicate irritation or infection. Because of all the questions and issues you have, and because of your age, I suggest you see a gynecologist for an exam and some solid education. If you have difficulty seeing a gynecologist due to money or privacy issues, find your nearest Planned Parenthood. They will be able to check you out to be sure there is nothing physical going on, test you for infection, and give you lots of education all at a sliding scale fee so you can afford it.

Part of having sex means being responsible for your sexual health, and that means seeing a doctor or nurse practitioner on a regular basis. It is for your own protection, and they will never judge you because of your age. They'll just be relieved you are smart enough to come in.

Here is the link for Planned Parenthood: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/about-us/where-we-work/health-center-directory-23127.htm Just enter your state and you can find the nearest office.

Take care of yourself.

Thank you much this is Jo-annie.. I'm just not signed in... haha... but I did start my period it is light but sometimes stop.. I just hope this doesn't mean i could have some baby in me.. This isn't what I want .. but thank you for your help.... And I think in Canada/Quebec it doesn't cost anything to go see a gynecologist.. anyways everyone that I know don't pay for it. Thanks a lot.

Hi Jo-Annie-

It really is as simple as this: Any time you have unprotected sex you risk pregnancy. The scenario doesn't change it or the number of pills or days or anything. Any time and every time you run that risk. Some people do spot or even have what seems like a normal period early in pregnancy, but most do not. The best thing to do is wait at least ten days after your unprotected sex and be tested for pregnancy.

It's really that simple. Good luck to you.

Doesn't birth control stop you from being pregnant? My period doesn't seem normal right now it is only spotting. It's been 7 days since the intercourse I took a test and it was negative but that was last Thursday. I will take another one this week with the nurse at my school... and yes I am very young to have a kid I am only 15 years old and this is not what I really want right now... SO this is why I'm so worried... And I've been wondering.. what does the bleeding after the unprotected intercourse have to do with??? Thank you once again Cary :)

I would like to know.. Is it possible to still be pregnant if you missed 3 pills during the last week of your box of pills and had unprotected sex right before? I have a very light flow right now and for about 2 days of forgetting my pill I had those big mega killing cramps on the left side of my lower abdomen. I did read somewhere that it is possible to have your period and still be pregnant.. it this true? And also I was wondering if starting your FIRST box of birth control 2 weeks or maybe a bit less after your last day of period could be bad and raise the chances of being pregnant? I read somewhere once again that it could and also it could form two eggs in you... once again is this true? Thank you for answering my questions :)

Hi Anonymous-

Is there a particular reason you aren't having the blood work and ultrasound done? These will definitely give you the answers you are looking for. Everything you said sounds possible-you could be pregnant, you may have miscarried-it is hard to say without the blood work and ultrasound to tell you. The only other option is waiting, and it sounds like you are far too worried for that.

My advice is to go back to the doctor and have the tests done. They will be able to tell you right away what is going on with you.

Good luck.
