ask: Slammed finger in door

I slammed my finger in the door at work about 2 weeks ago. It was swollen and purple[just from the smallest joint to the tip], and the nail is completely black. Well, the swelling has almost completely gone away, the end of my fingernail[cuticle and a strip of skin below that] is really dark as well, and the nail is reeeeally starting to pinch in at the sides. Is this normal? Should I go to the doctor? It's only causing slight discomfort.

Hi Eunoia,
Thank you for your question. A smashed finger can cause some pain. sometimes the pressure under the nail needs to be relieved, but only a doctor can make this determination. You may need to call your general practitioner's office and speak with the nurse. The nurse will tell you if he/she thinks you need to be seen by the doctor.

Good luck, and let us know how you're doing.
