Hi Anon

Thanks for your question and congratulations on looking to become more healthy!

Generally speaking - a healthy diet and exercise regime are all a person should need to maintain overall good health but a lot of people do take a supplement anyway - me included.

Focus on what you eat first. Make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables every day - five or six servings would be a great start (and is more than most people every do!). For what a "serving" is, click here: http://www.cookinglight.com/healthy-living/healthy-habits/how-much-serving-fruits-vegetables-00412000069526/page12.html

Also make sure you have lean proteins and lots of fiber. Eat breakfast cereal with very high fiber counts. I eat Kellogg's All-Bran Original every day and half cup serving has 10 grams of fiber in it, which is 40% of the daily recommended amount. It's also very filling, like all fiber-filled foods and has only 6 grams of sugar per serving. I do not buy our family any cereal that has more than 7 grams of sugar per serving. Add fruit to your high fiber cereal (whatever ones you end up choosing) and it's even better!

For supplements, a good all-round multi-vitamin should work (Centrum is a popular brand) and take an iron supplement if you need it. As a woman, make sure you are getting enough calcium. Foods rich in calcium include broccoli, beans, peas, and kale as well as low fat dairy products, nuts, pasta, oranges, eggs and tinned sardines and salmon. If you feel the need, take a calcium supplement. Take one that also has Vitamin D in it to help absorption and try to get 15-20 minutes of sunshine everyday. A Vitamin B supplement is good too.

Start exercising with walking, swimming and stretching until you can build up your strength.

One more thing: don't forgot to allow yourself a treat now and again. Once a week, give yourself a cheat meal - make it your favorite and add a small dessert in too. This will help with cravings, reward you for all your hard work, and just because everyone needs a treat meal!

I hope this helps and good luck on your path to weight loss and better health.
