Due to my lack of employment and subsequent health insurance I have been unable to afford to have my IUD removed let alone replaced with a new one. I am 46 years old. As of yet I have not experienced any outward signs of problems but am I basically living with a ticking time bomb inside me?

Anon - I've reviewed comments from several women about this topic in an online forum and they gave mixed opinions on whether or not this is safe. Some said it could lead to an infection, others reported they had no issues. There is also a risk of pregnancy associated with keeping an IUD longer than the prescribed period.
Since you don't have health insurance you may want to consider having your IUD removed at Planned Parenthood. They offer low cost, affordable services and work with people who have financial concerns. There's more information here:
