Please excuse my grammar since my eleven month old has been touching the keyboard I no longer have proper use of my periods and commas

It is very common to get kicked in the stomach by your child during pregnancy and most of the time your little one is protected in his or her little bubble better than we think> However< if you experienced any bleeding or the cramping persists I would definitely schedule an appointment asap with your obgyn

I know that I have had my fair share of kicks both hard and soft from my son and they"re no picnic but have fortunately not been any cause for alarm this pregnancy> Good Luck to you and take good care of yourself mommy>

If you have just found out that you are pregnant, the chances are that the pregnancy is in it's very early stages, and that the fetus is extremely small. In all probability both you and your baby are fine, but the only way of being absolutely certain is to get your GP or gynecologist to check you out.

I agree with the others - a soft kick will most likely be harmless. The uterus is actually quite well protected. I was often kicked while pregnant, as I changed the diapers of my other two babies - babies tend to kick out when being changed. In the end, when my husband was home, he changed the babies, to be safe.

I also fell down the stairs when 8 weeks pregnant. I was terrified and called my doctor. They said to look out for bleeding but told me in all honesty, they usually cannot save a pregnancy at this early stage if it's miscarrying. However, the baby who was in me at 8 weeks when I fell is now a happy three year old girl so all was well!

As the others said, look for bleeding or other signs (like continued cramping) but baby is likely to be fine.

Keep us posted and I know it's easy to say, but try not to worry. We wish you a very healthy and happy pregnancy!

Please do keep us updated on what your OB says!

I agree that a "soft kick" during pregnancy from your 2 year old is nothing to worry about, BUT, what did concern me is that you were concerned enough about it to ask the question...and that you connected the kick with cramping.

If you have any symptoms in your pregnancy, regardless of gestation, it is important to call your OB. Cramping can be normal, but cramping CAUSED BY a kick could indicate something...or just be coincidence with the timing. I'm not sure how a "soft kick" would "cause" cramping, unless you were off-balance and it caused a muscle cramp or jarring. Most likely, your fetus is completely fine, but since you were concerned enough to ask the question, I would follow-up with my OB as well. And, as Susan said, there are warning signs to look for: bleeding, severe pain, unusual cramping.

I just wanted to let you know that my point-of-view differed slightly from the other women's, and tend to err on the side of caution. My 3 year old has kicked me quite a bit throughout my pregnancy (I am now 26 weeks), and I have never experienced any physical effect from it (other than irritation!!!)

Period-like cramping at your early stage in pregnancy can actually be related to implantation of the fertilized egg to your uterus :) I remember mild cramps with my first pregnancy. Still make sure you to tell you ob at your appointment.

Congrats, good luck, and enjoy your pregnancy!

Stretching and pulling feelings are definitely normal and expected, and absolutely nothing to worry about!

I was slightly concerned when you said "I was kicked and started feeling cramping"; and a quick call to the doctor was not out-of-the-question with that description you provided; the word "cramping" can mean different things during pregnancy to different women, and I just wanted to clarify what you were referring to (not to be an alarmist, just cautionary).

Regardless of weight, every woman's ligaments, tendons, muscles and organs are either being stretched or pushed aside to make room for your growing uterus. It sometimes is alarming, (I know!), when you move suddenly and there is a sharp pain in one side that quickly goes away, or a feeling of aching, pulling, stretching...these are all normal feelings and will likely intensify as you reach your 3rd trimester.

Regular check-ups with the doctor will hopefully put your mind at ease. Are you keeping a log of your questions and concerns? Are you around other moms-to-be where you can compare notes, and help your pregnancy symptoms feel normal and valid (or, as normal as they can be?!) :-)

It's great to talk with your doctor and doctor's nurse, and I have also personally found exercise to be very helpful. This is my second child, too, and I still was paranoid every time I physically exerted myself, even though I know it is good for me and will not harm the baby... it's just like you said that you wonder about aches, pains, pulling, stretching...if it's anything to worry about. I have actually found prenatal yoga to be VERY helpful, as they have us do many stretches that feel amazing, and I'm not as afraid of my body (or hurting the baby) as I was before prenatal yoga. Are there prenatal fitness classes near you, and if so, are you interested in trying them out? It may give you more confidence in your body as well, and exercise during pregnancy is definitely recommended! Prenatal exercises are geared towards gaining strength and flexibility; not so much about cardiovascular fitness or weight loss at this point in our lives (so you don't need to worry about your weight).

Lastly, do you have any pregnancy reference books that you can refer to, from your first pregnancy? There are a few good ones that I like (and can recommend), and they do provide the "What If" scenarios, so you know WHEN to worry about certain pains, discharge or anything else during pregnancy.

thanks again the cramping did go away feel better now i haven't yet started prenatal care due to where i go was closed down for a few days and there are no available appointments until january 20,2010 so i was just concerned about my pains... NO i dont believe i had ever heard about the book you referring me to may i know the name and where i may find it...thanks again

I like a combination of Pregnancy Books (all available at the library, too):
What to Expect When you Are Expecting
- A classic, this one can be over-used if you read other's questions, and then wonder if you have the same thing...don't diagnose yourself, it is just a good reference book to look up things like pain or cramping
Belly Laughs
- good, humorous book to off-set the medical-type book, and still validates all of your questions and strange-pregnancy-sensations

Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy!
