Questions abound regarding dry humping, dry sex and dry intercourse. It is most often a question asked by girls and women, wanting to know if they can be pregnant when engaging in "dry sex".
The terms has been defined in many ways, depending on the person asking, and I wanted to break through the barriers and actually talk about the "embarrassing" aspects of what these terms actually mean.
What are you actually doing with your partner when you are doing anything "dry" in the sex-realm? Let's take the slang out of our questions, and talk about these taboo topics in the name of sexual health and wellness.
Sexual Health Quiz: Test Your Knowledge on this "Dry" Subject!
1. How would you describe/define the following terms?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
2. What specific behaviors am I engaging in if I do any of the following?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
3. Can you "get" pregnant from any of the following sexual activities?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
4. Can you spread or contract an STI/STD from any of the following sexual behaviors? (STI/STD = sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
ANSWERS:
1. Dry= No Bodily Fluid Contact
The word "dry" means that there is no bodily fluid exchange or contact, including fluids or lubrication from the penis, vagina, anus or mouth. These specifically can include pre-ejaculatory fluid ("pre-cum"), ejaculatory fluid or "ejaculation" or "cum", vaginal lubrication or vaginal secretions.
"Dry humping" and "dry sex" can be summed up by using the term: "outercourse".
There is actually no such thing as "dry intercourse", as penetration can never be considered a "dry" activity as there is natural lubrication from your body that is considered a "bodily fluid".
2. Outercourse can include:
- massaging, touching
- masturbation
- body rubbing, humping or "going through motions" of sex while fully clothed (genitals are fully covered)...most commonly called "dry humping"
Outercourse can not include:
- penetration of penis into vagina, anus or mouth
- body rubbing while clothed, but some "slippage" of clothing (underwear, specifically)
- ejaculation near vagina, even while covered, with chance of semen spilling over clothing
3. No, Outercourse would not lead to pregnancy
As explained above, outercourse does not involve the contact or exchange of any bodily fluids, and therefore, would not create a risk for pregnancy
4. Yes, Outercourse may still carry the risk of spreading or contracting an STI/STD
The word "dry" is important when talking about pregnancy and STIs/STDs, as Outercourse is a Good Safer Sex Option, but is not 100% "safe".
Safer Sex is any sexual behavior that reduces your risk for infection or pregnancy. Although most STDs/STIs are spread through exchange of bodily fluids, some are transmitted from skin-to-skin contact (meaning: you don't have to have intercourse/penetration to become infected with an STD/STI). The skin-to-skin contact through outercourse can be a risk for STD/STI.
Lastly,
What are the Benefits of Outercourse (for two consenting adults?)
- Pleasurable form of sexual expression and intimacy
- Type of "safer sex" without need for contraception (for pregnancy prevention)
- Lower risk for contracting or spreading STIs or STDs (sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- No risk for pregnancy
- It can be a sexual behavior that is pleasurable, exciting and not stress-inducing (from the point of view of women, wondering if they are pregnant)

Hello, I know in the back of my mind that I shouldn't be worried. But I am still very stressed, and I don't know why im so stressed this time. But here goes.
June 21, 2016 - 6:38pmMe and my boyfriend had been making out in a hot tub for about an hour. There was no ejaculation or pre cum. We were both in swimsuits, he had compression shorts and swim shorts. And I was wearing a sequin string bikini.
After we were done we decided to go for a boat ride. we both went inside and I dried myself off, but my suit was still damp, and put on sweatpants and a shirt. He completely changed into clothes. Underwear/jeans etc.
Things escalated and I ended up giving him a hand job over his underwear to the point of climax. I was sitting next to him, (only in my bikini) and I felt pre cum over his underwear but didn't feel the ejaculation. He usually has a lot of semen when he ejaculates but this time it wasn't very much. I had moved my hand before it happened so I never felt how much. He got up and used a towel to wipe off, but I wasn't really paying attention. So I assume he wiped off his hands as well. I kind of wiped my hands on the towel too even tho I didn't feel anything wet on my hands. After that I kind of walked around the boat and talked because I'm very scared of getting pregnant so I usually don't engage in anything after he Cums. It was very dark out (1 am) and so I used my phone flashlight for something I don't remeber, and I saw his pants and I only saw a very small wet spot on his jeans. He then told me to come sit on his lap. I said no bc he had cummed, but I ended up anyway. I sat on his lap for a few minutes in a damp bikini, and we starting kissing again. He then pushed me over to the seat where I had given him a handjob (I'm 99% positive there was no semen on the seat though) and rubbed my vagina over my swimsuit bottoms. After that I don't remeber what happened but we didn't engage in any other sexual activities. I might have sat on his lap again, but if I did I had put my sweatpants back on at that point. He adjusted his penis before he rubbed me, but im sure by then any fluids would be dry. And he wiped his hands on his jeans. Also, this was all 2 days after my period had ended. We then went back to the house, and before we went inside he pulled me close (bodies touching) and gave me a kiss. I then went inside and I washed my hands and peed. Why am I worried? I have no clue, but I can't put my mind to rest. I have had gas since the incident, which occurred on Sunday the 12th. Today it is the 21st, and I'm expecting my period on July 2nd. Anyway I read Gas was pregnancy sign, and today I got worried that I was peeing too much but I think it's just paranoia. I've felt a little nauseous but I know it's my anxiety (I get back anxiety attacks) so I know it's anxiety and not morning sickness. The main thing is I've been having cramps on and off, which aren't super painful, more like gas cramps, along with gas. I would just like to have some reassuring that I'm not pregnant. I try to be as safe as I know how when I engage in sexual acts. I have told my friends and they all say to relax and that I'm not pregnant. I am just very scared of getting pregnant because my parents are very strict so it's actually a fear of mine. And I know that if I'm this afraid I shouldn't be engaging in these acts. And me and my boyfriend decided to cut down on handjobs a lot, and if we do them to be extremely cautious. But we still haven't touched each other skin to skin. Any touching has been over clothes. No naked genital to naked genital touching, and no hand to naked genital contact. I think I've explained every corner of my concern. I know I'm overreacting but I just want to be careful. Thank you very much!

My boyfriend and I engaged in dry humping yesterday... I'm really freaked out because after we were done, I noticed some wetness on his khaki shorts. We were both fully clothed. He had on underwear and shorts and so did I. I started reading online, and I have found some cases of dry humping that lead to pregnancy... I'm so scared. I've been worrying about this nonstop all day yesterday and all night. I can't stop worrying... I'm so, so, so worried. I'm pretty sure none of his wetness got on my shorts... I'm not sure, though... Since sperm can travel through clothes... I'm so scared. I'm beyond terrified. I can't even think straight. I'm so, so, so scared. Please help.

Does dry humping lead to erectile dysfunction? Should I stop so we can have great sex when we get married?

Hi,
Around the time my period is scheduled to come on and my boyfriend and I engage in dry humping doggy style, I'll experience EXTREME(what appears to be labor like) menstrual type cramps. The pain will be so excruciating, it will feel like I'm on the verge of vomiting and a heating pad will somewhat help with the pain. It will proceed for about 10 minutes and then fade away. All the other times we dry hump in this position there is no type of pain at all only near my period. Sometimes my period would come on that same day or the next. When trying to look up this issue, there was only information for people having penetrative sex and these symptoms and many of them claimed a titled uterus was the cause. I will just like to know why exactly this is happening if there is no penetration.

Hi mak,
I really don't know why you are feeling this way and never have before. If the cramping worsens or persists, please speak with your gynecologist or primary care physician.

Is it possible to get pregnant when dry humping while on period. It was my second day when my boyfriend and I dry humped. We were fully clothed and I even had a sanitary pad on. I'm worried because a part of his khaki shorts is wet. Thank you very much!

Hello Anonymous,
It is not possible to get pregnant by dry humping because with clothes on there is no penetration and thus no ejaculation of sperm into the vagina. Secondly, when you are having your period, ovulation, which is the release of a mature egg, has already happened.

So as I understand it, it is impossible for me to get pregnant because 1: we were fully clothed and there's no direct contact of the penis and vagina, and 2: there's no egg to fertilize to begin with since I'm on my 2nd day of period. Did I get that right? Sorry for being paranoid. Oh and thank you so much for your reply! Have a good day!
