Adrenocorticotropic hormone is produced by the pituitary gland to stimulate the adrenal gland's cortex (outer region). ACTH causes an increase in glucocorticoids such as cortisol from the adrenals as well as other important adrenal hormones. During times of stress, the hypothalamus in the brain first produces a hormone (corticotropin-releasing hormone) that stimulates the pituitary to make ACTH. ACTH, in turn, acts on the adrenal glands. ACTH levels also rise in response to emotions, injury, infection, burns, surgery, and decreased blood pressure.
